McCain’s daughter supports gay marriage, youth lead movement

Meghan McCain is an advocate for equal rights within the GOP.
Sen. John McCain, who ran in the 2008 presidential election, wasn’t as open to same-sex marriage as his daughter seems to be.
Meghan McCain, a conservative Republican, takes her voice to the world much like we do at GayInAthens.com – through a blog. In a recent post titled “Memo to the GOP: Go Gay,” McCain said, “People may always have a difference of opinion on certain lifestyles, but championing a position that wants to treat people unequally isn’t just un-Republican. At its fundamental core, it’s un-American.”
McCain will speak this week at the Log Cabin Republicans’ national convention about gay marriage. The organization works towards equal rights within the Republican party for all Americans, including gays and lesbians.
To continue the momentum of the gay rights movement it will take young, fearless proponents of equal rights. And, in America at least, it will require support from both sides of the political dividing line.
I applaud the young McCain for taking a public stance and for standing up to the longheld belief that all Republicans are against the LGBT population. Perhaps her vision for a more open and accepting America will reverberate in some way through the powers that be.
