Athens LGBT Support Organizations

UGA Lambda Alliance

About: Lambda’s three-tiered mission includes adovocacy, education, and support. Lambda works tirelessly with administration, faculty, and other UGA student organizations to ensure representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students. Lambda also seeks to educate the university community and Athens at large about LGBTQ issues, as well as provide a safe environment for people at all stages of the coming out process.

Activities: Each semester, Lambda sponsors a wide variety of programs to educate the University community about LGBTQ issues. Such events and programs include LGBT History Month in October, National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, and Day of Silence.

Lambda also has its Speakers Bureau, an ever-rotating panel of Lambda Alliance members and affiliates who seek to provide accurate information to contradict heterosexist and cissexist myths and stereotypes, as well as present positive representations of the queer community by de-mystifying gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and queer and transgender people. Speakers Bureau panels are available for any University or community organization, class, or program.

Membership Meetings: Lambda meets every Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 222 of Memorial Hall (@UGA).

Membership Requirements: Anyone enrolled as a student at the University of Georgia is eligible to become an official member; however, any- and everyone is welcome to attend!

UGA GLOBES

About: GLOBES is a diverse organization of faculty, staff, and administrators whose mission is to advocate for, develop, and nurture UGA’s LGBTQ communities. In partnership with our allies, including students, alumni/ae, and local community members, we strive to educate, to improve campus climate, and to foster progressive change as we visibly work for social justice, equity, and Queer rights at UGA and beyond.

Activities: Events include political advocacy  (rallies, letter writing campaigns, etc.) on campus and in the community, educational activities (speakers panel, research projects, queer cinema series, etc.) and social events (queer happy hours, fall welcome social, etc.).

Membership Meetings: The organization holds a minimum of eight executive committee and eight open membership meetings per year. Open membership meetings are usually during the first week of every month during the regular academic year. Meetings are rotated during the weeknights the first week of the month to be sure that nobody would have a teaching/work related conflict with every meeting. We usually meet at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

Membership Requirements: LGBTQ employees (faculty, staff, administrators, research appointees, graduate/teaching assistants and retirees), students, and alumni of the University of Georgia and their allies and community partners form the membership of the organization. The organization is governed by the membership-at-large and daily business responsibilities are supervised by a volunteer executive committee.

Activities: The LGBT Resource Center offers educational programs and services to students, faculty and staff at the University of Georgia.  Some of our services include an Intercultural Library with approximately 1800 books and videos, sexual health resources, discussion groups, and Safe Space training for allies.

Membership Requirements: We do not have a membership.  Although our primary focus is to serve UGA students, some campus-wide programs are open to the public.
